Obesity is a worrying trend and seems to be a direct result of our modern day lifestyle, where everything seems to be taken to excess, such as junk food, sedentary behavior and drinking too much alcohol.  There is little doubt that poor lifestyle choices can lead to poor health outcomes, and the problem with having adopted a poor lifestyle, means that it is so much harder to overcome obesity.

One of the contributing factors to making poor lifestyle decisions is the excessive consumption of alcohol, whereby the resolve to improve lifestyle is made so much harder by drinking too much.

We are all accustomed to the problems with alcohol.  Whilst it may seem relaxing and a harmless thing to have just one glass of alcohol, the problem is that one drink leads to another and another until all resolve is lost.  But the problem does not just end with drinking too much alcohol.  Alcohol usually comes with excessive calories, so if you commonly drink alcohol every night, then you may find it difficult to lose weight.

In addition to drinking too much alcohol, many other lifestyle choices tend to become compromised when our resolve is weakened.  Such as the sudden urge to eat junk food, or the inability to stop eating chocolate or cake, or whatever your weakness is.

It doesn’t stop there.

The other problem with drinking too much alcohol is that it compromises any resolve you may have for exercise or any other form of recreation.  A weakness for alcohol tends to convert into a weakened resolved for physical activity, and this makes burning up those excess calories even more difficult.

So the compounding effects of drinking too much alcohol result in a double whammy effect.  Firstly, the resolve to make healthy diet choices is weakened and the excessive calorie intake from drinking alcohol is often compounded by eating too much.  The additional calories can cause a high risk of obesity unless you can turn around the discipline before it is too late.  But secondly, and making it difficult to burn up those excessive calories is that after drinking too much alcohol, the resolved to exercise is completely compromised, and the risk of obesity becomes a real problem.

What is the Problem caused by drinking too much alcohol?

The problem with alcohol being associated with an increased risk of obesity is that latest studies into overweight and obese people have revealed a high correlation with early death.

If that is the case, we need to change the way we think about drinking alcohol!

That is not all. The latest study published in “The Lancet” (The Lancet journal ) found that overweight and obese men are far more likely than women to die early.  This means that alcohol can be associated with causing premature death of men who are currently overweight, and do not make healthy lifestyle choices.

The study was conducted across a range of previous studies, using data which had been collected throughout the lifetime of many people from a diverse range of backgrounds and nationalities.   They found that on average, overweight people lose one year of life expectancy while people suffering from more severe obesity lose more than three years off their life.

The extent of the problem is that more than one in six people suffer from overweight and obesity, so there is a huge number of the population at risk of an early death, and worryingly, men who are obese were at much higher risk of premature death than obese women.

Avoiding the problem of drinking too much alcohol would go along way to avoiding obesity and a premature death.

The age at which a person becomes overweight is an important factor in the risk

of premature death, because if you are obese when you are young, and have made poor lifestyle choices (such as drinking too much alcohol), then it is likely to be much harder to turn these lifestyle issues around, and you are less likely to have to resolve to avoid alcohol when the habit is too deeply entrenched.

Rather than focus on the negative aspects of this latest health and well being study, we need to look at the imperatives that have been uncovered by the research.  If you are a male and you have a tendency towards overweight or obesity, then it may be time to resolve to avoid alcohol, and time to resolve to avoid obesity.  After all looking after your health has got to be one of the best reasons to avoid alcohol!

Even though many people are reluctant to make this change to their lifestyle, often it can be a very simple decision to avoid alcohol and avoid obesity, and with a little help, most people say it is one of the best decisions they ever made.

So really this is an ideal opportunity to take control over our lifestyle choices early enough, such that we can change the outcomes for the better, and also make the necessary changes before it becomes too difficult, or before our resolve to avoid alcohol becomes weakened by the very act of drinking too much alcohol.
