What is the big deal about failing these days? I always thought failing was bad, and truth be known, I hate to fail whenever I do something. My attitude is always to do my best, and try to succeed. But here is the problem – if I sense that I am likely to have a problem, or stumble, or struggle to finish on time, or get confused, I am just as likely to stop. Whoops – what that means is that I will never succeed.
Better to try and fail than never try at all
Otherwise life becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. If we believe that we will fail – we probably will. If we are afraid to try, or if we succumb to the fear of failure, then we will most likely fail. And if we are too afraid to try, then we also fail. So when we don’t try, because we are afraid we can’t do it, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, because we are guaranteed to not do it! But the bigger problem is that we will never learn how to if we never even try.
I believe it is better to try and fail than never try at all
The big takeaway point here is that it is better to try and fail than never try at all. But why is that such a difficult concept to actually put into practice? These things are easy to say, but generally we just don’t think like that. I still hate to fail, but I also love to learn new things, so at some point we all have to overcome our fears, and just have a go. So why am I telling you to try even if you don’t know what to do – do I want you to fail?? I suppose YES!
Learning from failure
You see the thing is, we often think we know what we have to do to get ahead in life, but the problem is that we often stop short of achieving the things we most want. Shocking isn’t it that we think we are trying so hard, but when the ultimate goal eludes is, we don’t really examine why – we just shrug it off
- you know – drown our sorrows
- console ourselves that it was too much to expect
- reset our expectations downwards
- reassure ourselves that we were never good enough….
There is no need to feel alone
Don’t worry – you are not alone here Robinson Crusoe!! We are all good at this one, and even the early psychologists were aware of it:
Maslow said: “generally we are afraid to become what we glimpse in our most perfect moments”
What did Maslow mean by this? Well, the thing is, we all have our dreams, goals, and big ambitions inside of us. This is a fact because if you are human and if you are alive, then you will have a set of values and a set of goals somewhere in your subconscious mind. As we get older, many of us forget about our childhood dreams, and those seemingly over-ambitious dreams of what life will be like when we grow up. Life simply gets in the way, or we get beaten down by other peoples dreams and goals, and we forget about our own. But those ideas are someone else’s goals and ambitions, and no matter how hard we try, we will never be able to make a success of those goals if we do not own them.
What are your big dreams, goals and ambitions?
The only way to meet the big goals and dreams we have inside of us, are to bring them out of our subconscious mind. And we have to dare to dream – just like kids. And then we have to have the guts to try, even if it means failing. Because even if we fail, it doesn’t mean we are not good enough, it just means we don’t know how. Yet. And if you have buried those dreams away for a long time (like me) then they will be a bit dusty. It might take some time to polish them up, and make them fit with your current lifestyle, or maybe you need to change your lifestyle!
That is all fine – but what can we do about it??
Well we have a lot of work to do inside our heads. Remember it is better to try and fail than never try at all. It is only in our own head that failure is some sort of problem. Instead – failure could actually be seen as an opportunity!!
- Failure is An opportunity to learn
- failure is an opportunity to rebuild
- failure is an opportunity to move through a blockage
- failure is an opportunity to beat complacency
- failure is an opportunity to overcome problems
- failure is an opportunity to make change
This is an opportunity to break through
For many of us – that is what we have been waiting for. This is an opportunity to break though what holds us back. The chance to shine! So what I wish for you Is that you are brave enough to try and brave enough to fail.
I wish for you to be big enough to conquer, succeed, and win!!
And it all starts with the will to try, and the guts to fail, because it is only through failure that we truly learn how to succeed.
If you have been thinking about trying to give up drinking, but afraid to try, maybe we can help!
Remember – don’t be afraid to try, what is the worst that can happen? Try and Fail?
Or maybe you will succeed, and maybe you will make that break through you have been waiting for – I know you can!
