Are you afraid of change?

I know, I know, we all cringe when we hear the word “change” bandied around the office.  And we all know what it is like when we hear the words, “Things are going to change for the better around here!”  But why does change have such a large effect on us, and why does it create an emotional response?  We are all affected by some level of response when it comes to change, but why do we get so defensive when it comes to change?

Do you need to change?

Maybe the real question is – do you need to make a change for the better in your life?  Do you find that your life seems out of control sometimes?  Do you find that you drink alcohol to help relax?  Does it work, or does it just make things worse?  If you find that things are not going right in your life, then maybe it is time to make a lifestyle change for the better?

What is change for the better?

The problem with change is that it means different things to different people.  Especially when it comes to making a lifestyle change for the better.  We tend to get very set in our ways, and we tend to settle into comfortable habits when it comes to lifestyle.  But if these habits are holding you back, or stop you from getting where you want to be, then these habits are not helpful.  Often that is what happens with alcohol.  We drink to relax, but it just become a bad habit, and doesn’t actually help to make us feel better.

Fear of change for the betterChange for the better

Fear of change is actually a deeply inbuilt emotion that resides deep in our subconscious mind.  Basically, our subconscious mind wants everything to be as simple and as painless as possible.  When our life gets too busy or too uncomfortable, our inner voice nags away at us to stop working and take a break.  The more uncomfortable we feel, the worse our inner voice nags away.  Eventually we will find a way to give in, and stop whatever is making us uncomfortable.  This can literally apply to anything in life, and is not restricted to work, chores, or dieting.  It applies to anything. And the only way to quieten the inner voice, is to give in to the desires of the subconscious mind.  Basically it means to quit doing what makes us uncomfortable.

Don’t let fear of change dominate your life

Yes, there is so much more to life than trying to restrict everything back to the bare minimum.  And why do we listen to the desires of the inner voice – does it really serve us?  Sometimes, the best memories, and the biggest adventures happen when we extend ourselves.  Do you have fond memories of a time when you ventured outside of your comfort zone, just for a short while.  Like going on an overseas holiday, or doing a skydive, or a bungee jump, or a zip line, or some other adventure.  The subconscious mind can place all sorts of obstacles in the way of an adventure!  But if you can overcome those disparaging messages from the inner voice, you will probably love it.  Sometimes those uncomfortable things can turn into the best adventures, and it sure gets the adrenaline flowing!

Fear of change for the better is an obstacle

There are all kinds of fear that can hold you back from having that great adventure, or taking the plunge, or making a lifestyle change for the better.  Obviously there is the fear of injury.  That is a real fear, and a good thing because it helps keep us safe from danger.  So if you have a fear of going too fast, then it is probably okay to back it off a bit to stay safe.  But don’t miss out on the adventure altogether!

Don’t be afraid to have fun!

Sometimes life can be a bit of an adventure, and it is best to have a go, even if you feel apprehensive.  Do you know that anxiety is actually just a form of misplaced fear.  Anxiety is simply the fear of some fictitious event, that will probably never occur.  So why worry about it?  We should not allow our imagination to play up on fears that do not really exist, because that leads only to increased anxiety.  Anxiety often leads us to drink more alcohol, and alcohol just becomes part of a vicious cycle.

Why are you afraid of change?

Sometimes we really need to analyze our feelings and emotions about things like change.  Why are you afraid of change?  Are you afraid that your life will change, or are you afraid that it won’t change?  Are you afraid that trying something new won’t work, or are you afraid it will work?  Are you afraid to move out of your comfort zone, or are you afraid of what will happen if you stay the same?  Ironic isn’t it, that when we listen to the inner voice, there are so many conflicting emotions.  Maybe we should stop listening to the inner voice!

How to overcome the fear of change?

Are you afraid of what will happen if you don’t make a change?  Are you afraid of where you will be in 5 or 10 years if you keep going like this?  It is possible to overcome a fear of change, and it is possible to make a change of lifestyle.  We have all heard the saying, “it is never too late to change”.  Well that is true, and it is also possible to have positive thoughts and attitudes.  It is possible to replace that negative and nagging inner voice, and remove all of those self doubts and anxieties.

Are you afraid to quit drinking?

It might sound bizarre, but for some of us, it can seem almost impossible to think about not drinking alcohol.  You might think it wouldn’t be fun to quit drinking.  It might feel as though we would be the only person not drinking.  Or we might fear being lonely at a party if everyone else is drinking.  Or maybe you are afraid of all of these things?

Change for the Better!

It is time to step away from all of those worries and anxiety!  Time to step away from the fear of change.  And it is time to step away from the vicious cycle of drinking too much alcohol.
